Laser Cutting with the Union College Maker Web

Faire: Electric City

Maker: Union College Maker Web

Home: New York, United States

Come learn about Laser cutting and assemble laser cut STEM kits with the Union College Maker Web Laser Lab! Laser cutters are a key tool in makerspaces, used for precise cutting, engraving, and etching on a wide range of materials such as wood, acrylic, fabric, and even metal. They operate by focusing a high-powered laser beam onto the surface of the material, which either vaporizes, burns, or melts the material along the specified design. Makers can create intricate patterns, custom shapes, and detailed engravings by controlling the laser's power and speed. This makes laser cutters ideal for creating prototypes, customized products, art, and educational projects, fostering creativity and rapid iteration in a community-driven setting.

Learn about CNC milling with the Union College Maker Web!

Faire: Electric City

Maker: Union College Maker Web

Home: New York, United States

A computer numerical control (CNC) router is a computer-controlled cutting machine related to the hand-held router used for cutting various hard materials, such as wood, composites, aluminum, steel, plastics, glass, and foams. A CNC router is very similar in concept to a CNC milling machine. Instead of routing by hand, tool paths are controlled via computer numerical control. The CNC router is one of many kinds of tools that have CNC variants. A CNC router typically produces consistent and high-quality work and improves productivity. Unlike a jig router, the CNC router can produce a one-off as effectively as repeated identical production. Automation and precision are the key benefits of CNC router tables. It's an exciting new kind of tool that you can come experiment with!

Bringing Mathematics to Life with 3D Printing at Union College

Faire: Electric City

Maker: Joy Wang (Union College Mathematics)

Home: New York, United States

This project aims to bring mathematical ideas to life through 3D visualization and making, and turn abstract concepts into engaging experiences for students. Mathematical models of quadratic surfaces are to be designed and printed. These are literal plots of equations studied in multivariable calculus. Seeing and touching the physical objects helps convey senses of spatial geometry, traces, level curves, and curvature of surfaces. Solutions of ordinary and partial differential equations can be effectively visualized and constructed through 3D printing, such as Lorenz attractor, chaos, time-dependent solutions, and so on. They allow for developing better understanding of the mathematical principles and physical behaviors of the solutions. 3D printing can also help illustrate mathematical proofs and theories.

3D Drawing with the Union College Maker Web

Faire: Electric City

Maker: Union College Maker Web

Home: New York, United States

Come use 3D pens to literally draw in thin air! A 3d pen is a handheld unique kind of drawing tool that works like a pen but spits out plastic. A 3d pen produces refined three-dimensional shapes which can draw on the surfaces or in the air and requires no computers or software. It uses ABS or PLA plastic, unlike a normal pen that uses lead or ink. The pen has a powered electric heater that has an extruder and a heating element that melts the plastic filaments. The ABS or PLA plastic filaments are fed in one end. Once the filaments melt, they are forced out through the extruder tip as warm thermoplastic that hardens within seconds. It's an exciting new kind of tool that you can come experiment with!
