The Electronic Jug Band

Faire: Rome

Maker: Rick MacDonald

An exhibit showing how to use the latest low cost microcontroller and sensor technologies to create DIY electronic music instruments. The design and building of such instruments is a hands-on learning experience in both maker electronics and music concepts. The idea is similar to the creation of a Jug Band in the mid 1900s where individuals used household materials to create their instruments and then played them together to make music. In this case however the use of modern electronics provides many more possibilities and a much larger scope for creativity.

Mosi Nova – Touchpad synth guitar

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Mosi Audio

Home: California, United States

The Mosi Nova is a MIDI controller designed to push synthesizers to the next level. It is shaped like a guitar, but has a large touchpad in the body that morphs the sound dynamically based on how it's touched. Instead of strings, it has buttons on the fretboard in the same layout of a traditional guitar, allowing guitarists to play synths in a way that is both intuitive and expressive. It can also be instantly retuned as a six-string bass, cello, or even lefty-flipped. The Nova outputs midi, which allows it to easily communicate directly with a computer, iPad or phone via its USB-C cable. Any standard virtual instrument can be loaded and played, enabling endless sounds and expressive freedom. We've got Novas to play at our booth!

Blipblox by Playtime Engineering

Faire: Bay Area

Maker: Blipblox by Playtime Engineering

Home: California, United States

Our Maker Story Playtime Engineering is Troy and Kate Sheets. We design and manufacture advanced electronic music toys designed for all ages. Our flagship product is the Blipblox synthesizer. The making of the Blipblox is a great example of taking your “maker” ideas and turning them into a real product and a successful business. It all started when Troy started tinkering with ways to produce synthesized sound from low cost computer chips. Using a Microchip microcontroller development board, Troy wrote the code to make a single sawtooth sound wave. From that early code grew the software that would power the Blipblox. On the hardware side, Troy wired in knobs (the board already had buttons) and the controls started to take shape. The next step was to design a PCB board that included LEDs, MIDI, buttons, knobs, and an audio amplifier. 3D printing was used to experiment with various product designs. After several years of hard work, we are extremely happy with the final product. Today, the Blipblox remains one of the only synthesizers on the market fully certified to international child safety standards for ages 3 and up. We are grateful to the Maker Community for all of the inspiration along the way. Maker Faire Exhibit Description Join Playtime Engineering at the Blipblox Sound Lab! Our Sound Lab is fun for kids (and adults) of all ages. You’ll get hands-on experience making music using Blipblox synthesizers and the all new myTRACKS music creation station.
