Bubo-2T

Faire: Rome

Maker: Kevin McAleer

WHAT IS BUBO-2T Bubo-2T is a robotic owl made in the Steampunk style. INSPIRATION Bubo was the name of the clockwork owl in the 1981 movie Clash of the Titans. It was animated by Ray Harryhousen. I’ve taken inspiration from other movie characters such as the Nautilus from the movie 20,000 Leagues under the Sea. I was also inspired by Tick Tock - the clockwork tin man from the movie Return to Oz. My other inspirations are creators of companion robots, such as Alex Glow and her Archie robot, Jorvon Moss, and also creators of wearable tech, such as Naomi Wu and Sophy Wong. Bubo-2T features advanced AI and machine learning and can detect hand gestures made in front of it. FEATURES 2 large eyes that open and close using 2 servers, one per eye Opening and closing mouth Each eye contains an Neopixel ring that is animated via a Raspberry Pi Pico The Pico is also connected via UART to a Raspberry Pi 4 2Gb One of the eyes also contains a Raspberry Pi Camera 3 Wide module The camera module enables the user to strike a pose, the hand gestures are detected and the camera will take a picture and tweet it to Twitter or Toot it to Mastodon (thats what the 2T or tooty means). For more information about Bubo-2T visit www.kevsrobots.com/bubo

Embodied AI Agent with a real robotic platform

Faire: Rome

Maker: Machine Learning Reply

The talk will focus on a real implementation of Embodied AI agent. We will start with an overview of the Machine Learning models covered within Reply R&D, therefore DinoV2 for Object Detection (https://dinov2.metademolab.com/), PALM (https://palm-e.github.io/ ) as a starting point for VLMs (Visual Language Models) and be able to generalize a large number of tasks that require multimodal input (both with images and text). We will then move on to a focus on a robotic agent such as SPOT by Boston Dynamics, therefore its architecture, the potential of this agent and the sensors present in stock. From here we will have the basis to move on to an implementation of Embodied AI Agents controlled completely with voice in natural language. We will show an orchestrator who, by receiving voice commands in natural language as input, will be able to control a robotic agent such as SPOT by Boston Dynamics and use the Machine Learning models necessary to complete the individual tasks within the episode initiated by the user. We will then show current developments in the way related to the use of Visual Language Models, such as RT-2(https://robotics-transformer2.github.io/) for robotic agents and LINGO-1(https://wayve.ai/ ) for autonomous driving.

Back to Maker Faire Rome, the extraordinary space dedicated entirely to artisans, manufacturing processes, and the digital revolution! Following the success of 2018 and 2019, Medaarch - in collaboration with WASP and Lab Mec - by popular demand, reintroduces the Center for Digital Craftsmanship for the 2023 edition of Maker Faire Rome. A 145 m² space designed as a public lounge where live demonstrations showcase how the connection between Italian craftsmanship, experimentation, and digital technology is contributing to the revival of Made in Italy, the enhancement of talents, the regeneration of territories, and the creation of an innovation ecosystem. This space is dedicated to the new Renaissance, where one can admire high-impact and commercially successful design solutions achieved through a skillful combination of traditional processes and the use of new digital technologies. The project's protagonists are the new artisan workshops: innovative and competitive enterprises operating in the excellence sectors of Made in Italy, such as fashion, ceramics, wood, and glass. These enterprises will guide us on a special journey into the new era of expertise, where creativity and technological innovation merge to generate large-scale innovations. So, mark your calendars from October 20th to 22nd at Fiera Roma in the Life Pavilion. Over the three days, eight enterprises will demonstrate their processes and the ways they have chosen to use new digital tools, showing how technological solutions can already find fertile ground in Italian production chains, creating strong opportunities for manufacturing and Made in Italy talent. There will be a chance to experience the most interesting virtual reality applications for craftsmanship, presented by Sautech, Medaarch, and Enco with the Artista project. You'll encounter the history and art of master Giuseppe Cicalese, who will create ceramic and sculptural works through live demonstrations involving 3D printing and virtual reality. You'll meet the talent of designer Marianna Capuano, who will showcase Tiffany glass works created with digital fabrication support. You can admire wooden design pieces by master Luca Colacicco, created through digital manufacturing and designed by Medaarch. Immersive Cube Experience

Faire: Rome

Maker: EY

The "Immersive Cube" is a three-dimensional environment that offers an immersive experience by projecting content, images and videos onto all the inner surfaces of the cube. In addition, it will be possible to further immerse oneself in virtual reality by using VR and AR headset, allowing the user to interact with objects and digital spaces. In detail, the experience will be divided into three different use cases: - TEA Research lab, which will allow the user to learn about genome editing projects for stronger, climate-resilient plants - Malteria Brewery Virtual Tour, where the user will be able to explore the secrets of the malt house, interact with themed objects and discover the traceability function of the beer in bottle - Sensorial Tour; here, users will be able to test themselves, trying to associate the right type of oil with the aroma perceived inside the Cube. What the three experiences have in common is a new way of conveying information and learning notions that are often complex (such as neuroscience or genome editing) or difficult to physically reach (such as visiting a malt house). This allows the public to learn more about the products they are going to buy, and be more aware of new scientific discoveries useful in underlining concepts such as made in Italy, food sovereignty and sustainability.
