Martins Miniature Marketplace

Faire: Wayne County

Maker: Martins Miniature Marketplace

Home: Ohio, United States

MARTINS MINIATURE MARKETPLACE A BLEND OF CRAFTSMANSHIP & TECHNOLOGY We are a family-owned business located in rural Ohio. Our workshop and our home are located on land from our family’s farm. Mary grew up watching the fields being plowed by actual horsepower. The windmill pumped water for the horses and cows in the pastures. A lot of craftsmanship was displayed in filling the needs of the farm work and family. Today our workshop is located in a revitalized three-bay auto body shop that was built and operated by Mary’s father. We have a solar array that provides the power we need to supply our daily needs and run the technology used to create our products. Craftsmanship is still alive as we make our ideas come to life through designs that start on paper and transform into digital graphics. The graphic forms the basis for a prototype to be cut on our laser cutter. Our products are made of a variety of materials, mostly hardwoods, and acrylic. Most pieces are prepared, assembled, and finished by hand. New techniques and tools are always being tested and added to our workflow. Our workshop is filled with wood, acrylic, and a variety of tools to allow us to create our products. We love crafting quality items and fulfilling custom orders for people. These processes blend years of experience and talent brought to us by knowledge and interest in arts, crafts, and technology. We are happy to create miniatures that provide a sense of craftsmanship and quality to our customers.

The HolmesMade Roadster : an in-progress self built car

Faire: Wayne County

Maker: Aaron Holmes

Home: Ohio, United States

A couple years ago we decided our fabrication skills were growing and a stretch goal was to build our own car. After researching options and methods we purchased a Chevy S10 truck to use as a donor. The truck was fully dismantled, engine and drivetrain were harvested as well as many other parts. The engine was fully torn down and rebuilt, a first for us. Extra efforts were made to paint the engine block and accessories. To start work on the car chassis we constructed a sturdy build table with a flat surface upon which the frame geometry was marked out. We cut, fit, and tack welded square tubing together to make the car chassis. A four link trailing arm suspension was designed and fabricated along with a panhard bar to mount and control the rear axle. Custom front upper and lower control arms were also designed and fabricated to locate the S10 wheels spindles. Coilover shocks at all four corners suspend the car. Work continued on top the build table and we used our shop made gantry crane we brought to the MakerFaire last year to hoist the engine and transmission up and into the chassis. Engine mounts were fabricated and installed as well as a transmission tunnel. A steering rack was modified to support our front end geometry and fitted to the chassis with custom mounts. By the time of the Faire we plan to have a rolling chassis with seats installed and progress on a dash mockup. We look forward to sharing our project with Wayne County MakerFaire attendees!
