The Community Science Workshop

Maker Faire Bay Area 2023

October 13th-22nd

Presenter Fabrication

The Community Science Workshop is a paradigm for science learning based on community, personal experience of real phenomena and lots of interesting junk. He’ll talk about his experience starting and running these places, and how they fit into the whole Make/DIY/STEM education landscape to bring kids and families to take the reins of science and technology.

Curt Gabrielson

Director of Salinas Community Science Workshop and vice president of the Global Alliance of Community Science Workshops, Curt works with thousands of underserved kids in the Salinas Valley, and wants to see a lot more CSWs start up. He has a degree in physics from MIT, but he learned most of the useful things he knows growing up on a hog farm in Missouri, and working with rural farmers and teachers in China and Timor-Leste. He’s interested in the question of when a kid should be expected to take charge of their own education, and how best for adults to clear the way for that.
