Customize your own DIY face mask for comfort and style

Virtually Maker Faire 2020

May 22nd-23rd

Exhibit

When I first started making masks in February I tried to make a generic mask that would offer protection and comfort for the wearer. I made about 100 masks and passed them out to my family, friends, and community. I was lucky enough to get feedback from the wearers. What I found was the pattern, material, and strap type needed to vary depending on who was wearing the mask to increase comfort. The mask would only be worn if it was comfortable and looked good. I've now worked through six variations of three mask patterns and can speak to which combinations work best for different users. People prefer to have elastic straps for quick trips out of their home. For extended wear periods, straps are preferred. Nose bands are helpful for reducing fogging for glasses, but then require hand washing the mask instead of using a washing machine. I will be demonstrating the construction of these 6 variations and talk about the pros and cons of different materials as well as ways to embellish and make your mask your own.
