Learn 2 Code 2 Learn... remotely
Virtually Maker Faire 2020
May 22nd-23rd
"Learn 2 Code 2 Learn... Remotely" focuses on what we are doing at The Urban Farming Guys Afterschool Program and Operation Breakthrough to provide interesting projects for students to work on remotely / at home / in small groups together subject to CDC guidelines for COVID-19. We focus on computer science concepts with students across different projects to learn how to code, create a game, 3d model, explore options to use computer science tools, and have fun! Our team at The Urban Farming Guys (http://theurbanfarmingguys.com) leverages our local makerspace to run afterschool programs for coding and robotics at the Lykens neighborhood on 12th Street and Myrtle in Kansas City. We also feature a working smart IoT greenhouse that produces 1000 heads of lettuce a week in conjunction with volunteers and interns, exploring local sustainability practices for hydroponic and aquaponic urban farming. Our raspberry pi computer lab hosts coding projects. Our Urban Farming Guys Afterschool Program hosts robotics team competitions and other student activities that encourage math, science and programming activities to engage students in learning as a way to connect technical skills into the community. This session will focus on resources makers can use at home and via remote connections to students to explore computer science concepts and have fun.
