The Fool's Board: Social Game System

Stage B , Saturday 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM See Kipp speak about teaching DIY to engineering students.

MAKE Demos , Sunday 12:00 PM - 12:45 PM Learn how MAKE author Kipp Bradford made The Fool's Board, a wearable, wireless, social game system that combines Zigbee radio modules with Arduino microcontrollers.

Kipp Bradford and Brian Jepson have developed a Socialbomb-inspired wearable game. The Fool's Board is designed to be a flexible platform for social gaming. It's got:

* ATMega168 running the Arduino bootloader
* An XBee for 802.15.4 wireless communications
* Some push buttons
* An 8x8 array of surface-mount LEDs

Here's one game: each gamepiece randomly chooses whether it likes or dislikes each other gamepiece. When your gamepiece is close to players it likes, it gets happier. When it's close to players it dislikes, it gets sadder. The goal is to make it happy, keep it in a neutral mood, or make it sad, depending on how you feel.
