Maker Faire Bay Area 2009
B. Coole Designs

Location:   Expo Hall  244

I am a textile artist, working in historic, fantasy, and contemporary textile. I create costumes, especially Steam Punk. I also sell patterns, findings, and other bits for people that do their own costumes. I do machine embroidery of original, historic, and reproduction designs. Each piece is my own work, not manufactured overseas. The original art is from independent artists that specialize in unique areas of research, like Celtic knots, biologic drawing, and antique machinery. The historic images are from various sources like: archeological digs, ancient manuscripts, and petyroglyphs. The reproduction work is from stuff like 17th century waistcoats, Elizabethan gowns, and Regency pockets.

About the Maker(s)

B. Coole [
A lifetime of sewing, a love of historical research, and a muse with a wicked sense of humor have drawn Barbara into the world of textiles... She combines techniques from the past and historic art with contemporary machines and materials in projects small and large, from embroidered buttons to full on historic costumes. Her work ranges from reproduction accuracy, to costuming flights of fancy. Lace and vinyl, satins and linens, it’s all about the thread. I try in my booth to be a place to facilitate people's costuming creativity. If in the course of making a living I can help someone make that drop dead gorgeous steam punk outfit, fantastic. If they can open up new ideas for me, so much the better!
