Maker Faire Bay Area 2008
Contraptor Lounge

Maker Main Stage (Fiesta) , Saturday 1:30 PM - 2:00 PM

Location:   Outdoors

Leading Steampunk practitioners will talk about "contrapting" techniques and the creative process, including the metalworking and finishing techniques they use in their widely acclaimed Steampunk tech projects (such as von Slatt's Steampunk keyboard and monitor, and Datamancer's key-wound Victorian laptop). They'll also talk a little bit about their design philosophy and how one can "steampunkify" modern gadgetry.

Libby BulloffLibby Bulloff [
Steampunk Magazine/Exoskeleton Cabaret
I am a photographer, graphic designer, writer, and artist, specifically focusing on steampunk. You may have seen my projects on various blogs such as Boing Boing, WarrenEllis.com, Diesel Sweeties, Craftzine, Makezine, the Webomator Blog, Street Tech, and Etsy's The Storque. I also write, edit, and illustrate for Steampunk Magazine, and have contributed to Weird Tales Magazine. My work synthesizes art and craft, retrospect and innovation. It is about creating impossibly wondrous worlds out of the discarded and forgotten in order to resurrect a glorious future.

In the Lounge, I will be discussing Steampunk Magazine and steampunk culture with Jake von Slatt and friends. I will also be taking photos and displaying my steampunk artwork.

Molly "Porkshanks" Friedrich
Molly Friedrich is a freelance designer and wearable artist. Says Libby Bulloff of Friedrich: “Molly’s artwork is actually Molly herself. She’s a fully-automated diesel-powered crafting machine, spouting philosophies and plans, and is constantly decked out in lavish handmade garb and ray guns.”

Richard Nagy [
www.datamancer.net
Richard "Doc" Nagy aka "Datamancer" from www.datamancer.net is a rebel Maker, backyard fabricator, shadetree mechanic, propmaker, contraptor, steampunk computer modder, and all-around "jackass of all trades". Born in New Jersey, he has recently moved to California to pursue a career in freelance custom fabrication for films and discerning collectors. His creations are varied and include a laptop made of wood and brass with a lid full of clockworks that starts with a clock-winding key, a sword whose design came to him in a dream, numerous classic and custom car projects like a 1956 Ford pickup and a 1964 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, custom jewelry, sculptures, and made-to-order computer keyboards that look like they were pulled out a Jules Vern novel.
