NewcastleGateshead
Two exciting destinations that have become one, Newcastle (on the north bank of the River Tyne) and Gateshead (on the south) have become NewcastleGateshead and have undergone a spectacular transformation in the last decade. Linking the two areas is the vibrant Quayside, a cultural hub of art, music, architecture and nightlife. The waterway has seven spectacular bridges, including the famous Tyne Bridge and the new Gateshead Millennium Bridge, acclaimed worldwide for its beauty and innovative 'eyelid' structure, which opens and closes to let ships pass.

The Quayside is also home to two of NewcastleGateshead's landmark buildings: The Sage Gateshead - with fantastic live music - and BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, a converted flour mill which now showcases dynamic and diverse international art exhibitions. The cultural venues don't stop there: slightly further into the city is the Theatre Royal, which has been showing performances for more than 180 years and still stages large productions, plus numerous other galleries and museums.

Perhaps the greatest piece of art in the area is Antony Gormley's Angel of the North. Standing proudly at the entrance to NewcastleGateshead, the vast, open-winged sculpture is a welcoming and impressive sight. Recognised as one of the 12 "Icons of England" and with wings wider than the Statue of Liberty is tall, the Angel is truly a sight to behold.

A key part of any city break is shopping, and NewcastleGateshead has an astonishing array of stores. From bric-a-brac to boutique, every taste can be indulged here. The city centre has an impressive number of outlets but at the forefront is the MetroCentre, Europe's largest shopping and leisure complex.

Worn-out shoppers can take a rest in one of the city's relaxing parks, such as Saltwell Park, known as the country's finest Victorian park. Bird-watchers can spot magnificent birds of prey such as red kites swooping over the majestic countryside just outside the city.

For those with a passion for sport, the city has a wealth of venues offering the chance to see live action. St James' Park is the famous home of Newcastle United (in addition to live games, stadium tours are also on offer here), while rugby union side Newcastle Falcons play at Kingston Park and Gateshead International Stadium and Newcastle Racecourse offer the chance to see top-class athletics and horse-racing.

NewcastleGateshead's history dates back around 2000 years, to when the Roman's settled on the north bank of the Tyne and everywhere you look you'll see reminders of the past, from the medieval city walls to the 12th century Castle Keep from which the city takes its name. The Discovery Museum holds a treasure trove of information on life in the area through the ages. The Centre for Life is also a great learning experience for both kids and adults, while young readers can delve into Seven Stories, The Centre for Children's Books.

"With throngs of young and old alike packing into the San Mateo fairgrounds, the 2007 Maker Faire was an improbable mixture of spectacle and practicality--a combination of engineering, crafts, science, and art that seemed to sufficiently blur the lines between all four."
-Bryan Gardiner, PC Magazine, May 21, 2007

"This is where inventors and artists come to share their wares."
- CBS Sunday Morning

"Don't be misled by the name of the weekend's staid-sounding 'Maker Faire'. The San Mateo-based event is a celebration of destruction as much as innovation, with touches of art and anarchy thrown in."
- Lisa M. Krieger, San Jose Mercury News, May 20, 2007

"Combining old-fashioned crafters with forward-thinking technorati, fashionistas, and mad scientists of all stripes, the Maker Faire is a hands-on celebration of all things DIY brought to life by Make magazine."
- The Onion, October 18, 2007

"Here at the Maker Faire in San Mateo, all of your twisted dreams can come true."
-HOST, G4, Attack of the Show! May 23, 2007
