Dumpster + Design = Home Sweet Home

How do we equip the current generation with the sustainability skills they need to address the 'grand challenges' such as climate change? We think hands-on, design-centered challenges are the key - and that's why we got a used dumpster. From design to implementation, students will use innovative math and science curricula to help Professor Dumpster transform the barely habitable garbage container into a sustainable house and interactive teaching lab. Professor Dumpster will need all the help he can get because he's about to make the dumpster his new home address!

The machine I have built is called the Electron Discharger. With a single touch I can discharge a static build up of electricity. The shock is enough to disable small devices and even corrupt data.


Engineering for English Majors

At its core, engineering is really just figuring out how to solve problems when you don't have all the information in front of you. Engineer Steve Nordhauser of the Tech Valley Center of Gravity, a makerspace in Troy, NY, will take you through the eight steps needed to approach a problem and see it through to completion. Low-tech robotics instructor, English Major, and TVCOG Board Member Kathy Ceceri -- author of the family hands-on activity books "Geek Mom" and "Robotics: Discover the Science and Technology of the Future" -- will help keep the discussion at a level everybody can understand.

Shelter 2.0 is a digitally fabricated transitional shelter intended to serve disaster relief, homelessness, or other needs. In 2011, we installed 3 in Haiti. This talk describes the shelter, it's recent evolution, as well as the process of delivery.
