Back to Meet the Makers

3D Design Practice

Presenter

This panel brings together talented designers Todd Blatt, Kacie Hultgren, Tony Buser, Matt Stultz and Fred Kahl - all featured in Matthew Griffin's upcoming book "Design and Modeling for 3D Printing;" (Early Release, Sept 2013). Each will share about their design practice -- how they got started, how they develop their work, what new tools and techniques they are picking up -- as well as opportunities to learn more about their design work elsewhere at this year's Faire. Moderator Griffin will also share leads for other breaking 3D-related design and printing technology attendees can check out.

3D Printing a Mars Settlement

Presenter

When humans eventually settle the Red Planet they will rely heavily on fabrication tools in a lab similar to the hackerspaces and makerlabs wenwork and play in. In extreme environments far away from Earth, future pioneers will use polymer raw materials from Martian air and water to 3D print and hack themselves a home on Mars. The Mars Foundation in conjunction with HI-SEAS and Aleph Objects are now testing some of these concepts with a Lulzbot 3D printer at a prototype Mars base in Hawaii. Join us to and learn about future Mars missions and how your CAD work can directly impact the next generation of space explorers.n

3D Printing in the Replica Movie Prop Community

Presenter

I got involved with the maker movement through movie prop replication. On the Replica Prop Forum, people spend a lot of time and pay incredible attention to detail to identify parts of screen used props in films and TV shows. The parts which are never identified or were created from scratch for the orignal film prop must be recreated by traditional sculpting, or now more and more with 3d printing. I will talk about how I use 3d printing to model and manufacture movie prop replicas like the green lantern ring, and will tell the story of m first movie prop replica project, recreating the Sonix Victory 75 radio used on Sandtrooper backpacks.

AS220 Labs is a Providence, RI's local fab lab and makerspace. The members of AS220 Labs have brought a sampling of some of our work to Maker Faire.

Autodesk

Exhibit

Autodesk 123D is free software integrated with content and fabrication services. At Maker Faire NY Autodesk will be hosting a hands on makerspace where participants can have hands on experiences with our free apps and 3d printers. We also will be hosting an educational hack-a-thon where educators will be answering the question ""How do you use a 3D printer in your classroom?

B9Creations

Exhibit

The B9Creator is an open source hardware/software high resolution 3D Printer. The B9Creator combines innovative methods with off the shelf DLP technology to produce parts that compare with machines costing thousands more. A wide range of photo-polymer based resins can be used to obtain the material properties desired. From resins that are suitable for lost wax casting applications to very reactive "fast grow" resins for quick proto-typing. No other machine comes close to offering the flexibility and low entry cost. Launched in early spring of 2012, the B9Creator has been delivered and is in use by hundreds of satisfied users already and enjoys the largest resin based printer user community anywhere. Don't wait any longer, get printing "hi-res" today!

Build LAB: Making at the Scale of Buildings

Presenter

Founded in 2013 in the Myers-Lawson School of Building Construction, Build LAB is focused on applying digital production and manufacturing techniques at the small and medium scale to the big problems of construction. Product development, industrial design, information technology, and DIY have all found innovations using these tools and techniques, buildings are next.
This presentation covers the LAB from founding and benchmarking through establishment and equipping with a focus on the process of creating an intentional community of innovation.

Collaboration in an Open Innovation Environment: Designers in Thingiverse

Presenter

Product designers increasingly contribute their work to remix communities, communities in which designs are shared, modified, combined and implemented. Our study focuses on a community called Thingiverse, in which designers share files that can be used to create 3D printed objects. Our analysis suggests that analysis of remix network structure may provide ways of tracing innovation processes and detecting the emergence of new ideas, combination of disparate ideas. As a result, it may be possible to encourage innovation by guiding interested inventors toward potential pairs of structurally separated and conceptually diverse ideas.
