Fuel 3D Technologies, developer of 3D scanning solutions, will be demonstrating its ground-breaking 3D scanner at Maker Faire. Throughout the show, visitors to the company’s stand will be able to find out more about 3D scanning and receive a free 3D scan of their own face. They will then be able to access their file online for 3D printing or to experiment with other applications. In addition, the Fuel 3D scanner will be present on the Feetz stand at Maker Faire to showcase our recent collaboration with the developer of custom fit footwear. Why should I care? The world is getting very excited about 3D and 3D printing, but people are struggling to understand how they can get the content they need for these applications. The Fuel 3D scanner has been developed to allow anyone to generate high-quality 3D models from real-life objects. Fuel 3D has developed an affordable handheld 3D scanner that delivers high resolution shape and color capture for a range of 3D modeling applications, such as 3D printing, as well as on-screen applications like 3D art, animation and game development. The scanner’s ability to accurately capture color 3D models of the face is ideally suited to the rapidly growing trend of personalization.

Taktia will be demonstrating our first-of-its-kind handheld CNC machine. Attendees will be able to try out our working prototype, which is the size of a handheld router and can be used to precisely cut shapes of any size out of wood, plastic, or sheet metal, directly from a digital design. How does it work? The user loads a 2D shape that they want to cut, and then positions the tool manually in the approximate area of the tool path. The tool then uses a camera to track where it is, and can adjust its own position to move the cutting device to be exactly on the plan. To cut a shape, the user just approximately follows the desired path by following graphics on an onboard screen, and the tool constantly self-adjusts to follow the plan perfectly. You can see a YouTube video of the tool here: http://youtu.be/-UmL7xZZSUk

Spark + Pebble = hacking the internet of things at Maker Faire Bay Area Pebble was born from hacking. Back in 2008, Eric plugged a Nokia phone display and Bluetooth radio into an Arduino board and our first prototype came to life. Hacking is part of Pebble’s DNA, and is reflected today in the awesome apps made by Pebble developers using our SDK -- from flying an AR Drone to controlling a Tesla. That’s why you’ll find Pebble at Maker Faire Bay Area on May 17 and 18 at the San Mateo Event Center. But we’re not doing it alone. We’re sharing a booth with the wonderful folks at Spark, makers of the Spark Core -- a tiny, Arduino-compatible WiFi development board. The Spark team created an easy-to-use product that allows anyone to connect everyday electronics to the internet over WiFi. We have a lot in common, from our Kickstarter beginnings and passion for hacking to our open platforms and strong developer communities. Spark and Pebble are joining forces at Maker Faire to enable makers and developers to explore new and exciting ideas that connect our two platforms. We believe that, just like the web, the internet of things will only thrive when people collaborate. Join us next weekend in San Mateo for two fun-filled days of hacking on Pebble and Spark Core.
