Gearbox Kenya

Gearbox Kenya

Gearbox is the first impact-oriented makerspace for hardware entrepreneurs in Africa, giving Kenya's makers the tools they need to design and build sustainable solutions to local problems.

What inspired you to make this project?:
Gearbox was founded by a group of Nairobi-based entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts as a response to the difficulties of designing and prototyping hardware products in Kenya. BRCK, a maker of edtech and connectivity solutions for low-infrastructure environments, along with Sanergy, a manufacturer of sustainable toilets and waste-to-energy products, joined forces with Ushahidi, a nonprofit software development company, and the iHub, one of the first dedicated spaces for Kenya's tech community, to build a space that would help Kenya's hardware entrepreneurs gain access to much needed equipment, materials, training, and expertise.
