CBox: The Creative Box

CBox: The Creative Box

Get creative! CBox — the Creative Box — combines 3D printing technology with an innovative new multimedia microcontroller platform to create DIY handheld video games, interactive art, toys, customized gadgets and more, all that you can build at home.

What inspired you to make this project?:
I've always wanted to make colorful, responsive devices. I also really like the idea of making a product from scratch, custom-tailored. When cheap LCD modules hit the market, I was excited. But I found it difficult to drive the displays and achieve the level of performance and responsiveness that I wanted, so I was inspired to create this platform, using the programmable features of Cypress microcontrollers to make it work.

The idea of doing 3D printing and making a handheld game was inspired by Adafruit's PiGrrl, and I had the idea to do the same kind of thing with my microcontroller instead of the Pi. It turned out to be a good showcase for what can be done with the CY52 micros. The fact that the PCB's are custom-designed means we're not limited to a predesigned board like the Pi, and it opens up some new ideas and possibilities which I want to further explore.
