What inspired you to make this project?:
I make my living prototyping projects for other people through my own machine shop. I purchased a 3D printer to speed up the prototype development process and found the potential of 3D printing tremendous, but lacking in practicality.

Lacking because I still needed a number of different machines to accomplish similar tasks. Why did I need to have different machines to accomplish the different needs of a prototyper when I could combine them all into one?

As long as I was combining functions I needed, why not expand the capabilities of the machine by making it an open architecture? Isn't that how Apple introduced the PC to the public at large? The Apple II was open for expansion in ways the company could never have imagined. Same as the original IBM PC.

The same needs to be done with 3D manufacturing. 3D printing is just one of the many uses of a 3D platform. What is needed is an expandable platform which allows the end user to customize their machine to their specific needs.

Hence the Make-All Universal Workstation!
