Race Track
Thunderdrome Race 1

i3 Detroit

The Power Racing Series (PPPRS) is an event where Hacker/Whateverspaces turn those toys cars that everyone wanted but only stupid Brad from down the street owned (even though everyone hated him), into highly competitive sort-of racing machines. Teams are allowed quite a few liberties (motors, batteries) but we also made a few restrictions so you masochistic engineers can pleasurably cry yourselves to sleep at night. You have $500 to do this with (aside from safety equipment, cause we don't want to mop you up either). You also compete in three events, and you'll have to do more than just drive fast (re: be entertaining) to win points. After all, it's not like we want an actual race to break out. Oh and it is rather unsafe, so you'll sign a waiver. You built it, so we knew you'd understand

Tornado Intercept Vehicle - Sean Casey

To capture the extraordinary, first-of-a-kind footage in Tornado Alley, director Sean Casey not only had to learn how to enter a tornado, he had to design a vehicle that could take him there. It was a tricky proposition, considering tornadoes have the power to pick up locomotives and hurl cars through the air—carrying them over distances of up to a mile.

In 2002, Casey sketched out a design (which, he says, looked “remarkably similar to the spaceships I drew when I was twelve”), taught himself how to weld, and, that summer, work on the original tornado intercept vehicle began.

The TIV, as it is known, was built for one express purpose: to house and shuttle Casey’s camera (he and his crew call it “an armored tripod on wheels”). He created a military-style filming turret, inside of which he maneuvers much like a tank gunner, only he’s shooting film instead of ammunition and his range is 360 degrees. Featured prominently in the film Tornado Alley, TIV 2 is an updated incarnation of the original vehicle, built on a Dodge Ram 3500 platform. A third axle was added, giving it six-wheel-drive capability, in addition to four hydraulic drop-down skirts that block wind and debris during an intercept, a self- leveling suspension system, a modified 6.7-liter turbo-diesel engine, and a 92-gallon fuel tank. TIV 2 weighs 14,000 pounds and has a top speed of over 100 mph—not bad, but still a little sluggish if you’re being chased by an EF5 tornado.

Showing only 2-Days during Maker Faire in The Henry Ford IMAX Theater:

Join Storm Chasers star Sean Casey and the researchers of VORTEX 2, the most ambitious effort ever made to understand the origins and evolution of tornadoes, on this heart-pounding science adventure. Armed with a 70mm camera, a fleet of customized vehicles designed to withstand gale force winds, torrential rains and unrelenting hail, and an arsenal of the most advanced weather measurement instruments ever created, the stars of Tornado Alley take audiences on a thrilling quest to experience a tornado's destructive power at point blank range. Experience the adrenaline and the science of nature's most dramatic phenomena!

Traversing the "severe weather capital of the world," Tornado Alley documents two unprecedented missions seeking to encounter one of Earth's most awe-inspiring events - the birth of a tornado. Filmmaker Sean Casey's personal quest to capture the birth of a tornado with a 70mm camera takes viewers on a breathtaking journey into the heart of the storm. A team of equally driven scientists, the VORTEX2 researchers, experience the relentless strength of nature's elemental forces as they literally surround tornadoes and the supercell storms that form them, gathering the most comprehensive severe weather data ever collected. This science adventure reveals the beauty and the power of some of our planet's most extreme - and least understood - weather phenomena.

These technologies have a positive environmental impact through: utilizing a renewable resource, reducing CO2 emissions and, in some cases, reducing weight (better fuel economy) and being entirely compostable. I will talk about our successes thus far, challenges that we must overcome, and current work in this very important area. I will also talk about Ford's global sustainability vision. This includes processes that are being established for engineers to determine the best solutions to meet all of their durability and functional requirements, while considering the environmental impact of materials.

Robots, kittens and mustaches fly by, colored lights flash, and bells ring as the player hammers enthusiastically at the game pad. Will she beat the clock? Come learn how Etsy coded, soldered and sewed together a new way for Maker Faire visitors to interact with Etsy's marketplace of over 9.5 million handmade, vintage and crafting supply items. We'll talk about how to build an input device using the Arduino microcontroller, how to marry a piece of hardware to a software API, and how to pull it all together using the programming language Processing. What is Etsy? Etsy is an online marketplace for handmade goods, vintage items and craft supplies. The Etsy community offers millions of unique items from sellers in more than 150 countries. We connect shoppers with independent creators and designers to find inspiring handmade goods, while providing artists and makers a platform on which to build their own businesses.
