Chladni Singing
Watch a voice-driven Chladni plate! Sound pioneers Robert Hooke and Ernst Chladni discovered in the 18th and 19th centuries that sand scattered on a glass or metal plate sent into resonant vibration with a violin bow arranges itself into interesting patterns according to places of stillness. Chladni plates are today often driven by tone generators and used in scientific demonstrations of modes of vibration, but Meara will also show how the human voice and various speech sounds have resonances of their own.

Creating Killer Innovations
Innovation is a key catalyst for economic recovery, yet some find it elusive. As Vice President and Chief Technology Officer for HP’s Personal Systems Group, Phil McKinney sees daily examples of the breadth of human ingenuity to solve social, economic, political and even technical challenges. McKinney is passionate about tapping that human ingenuity to deliver great results and is regularly sought out to guide teams to unleash their own creative potential. In this presentation, McKinney will share the “how” of unleashing your own personal creativity. One example that he will share is the turning points in his own R&D team’s journey to identify and create a whole new way for computers to interact with the world’s population -- ways that involve natural human expression with nary a keyboard or mouse in sight. Attendees leaving his presentation will discover a renewed level of confidence in their own ability to create the next killer innovation while organizations will have the confidence that they can compete and win in the emerging creative economy.

DIY midi controller and step sequencer
This project is with the Bay Area Computer Music Technology Group (BArCMuT): This is a DIY project. The idea is to build a compact MIDI controller with a simple step sequencer (something like 4 tracks simultaneously with 16 steps each) along with some controls for the sequencer (like a monomer like control). Simple enough to record some ideas real quick, without having to turn on the Laptop, wait for Live to start up etc. The whole project is based on a Parallax propeller ship and several peripheral chips like I2C 8 bit parallel port, 11-channel 12 bit ADC converter etc. The project is very much a bunch of components right now and far from finished, but it might be interesting for people to take a look and chat a little about the electronics etc.

Escape From Berkeley (by any non-petroleum means necessary) Jessica Hobbs
"Escape from Berkeley (by any non petroleum means necessary)" is a road rally of alternatively powered vehicles from Berkeley, California to the US-Mexican Border. Part engineering problem, part artistic opportunity, the rally challenges contestants to start their "engines" on something other than petroleum based fuel, and by any means necessary, cause their "vehicles" show up at the border five days later - using only fuels/power/motive force scavenged for free along the route. "Some entries will arrive at the start line with extreme technical innovation. Others will arrive with only creative excess. The best entries, as well as the likely winners, will need to arrive with both." - Jim Mason

forageSF, the wild food CSA Iso Rabins
forageSF is a San Francisco based project that provides a bi-weekly CSF (community supported forage). A box of all wild foraged foods. That means nothing cultivated. No iceberg lettuce or rutabagas, instead we have cattail hearts and minors lettuce. The first time human hands touch this food is when we pick it. Wild food is often more nutritious than its cultivated cousins, and takes no energy to produce (except free from the sun). We mean to change the way people see the woodlands around them, creating a true connection with our local environment, building community around food, and re-purposing the word "weed". Iso Rabins, founder of forageSF, will be on hand to answer questions, as well as holding workshops on homemade sea bean and bull whip kelp pickling.

Analog TV sets in low-income, non-English speaker, disabled and other households receiving TV over the air will no longer function unless steps are taken to maintain reception after the transition, for example by using a digital converter device. Technical and logistical challenges associated with the DTV transition are expected to impact these households hardest. James Miller, Attorney Advisor at the FCC, will discuss these issues and how this unprecedented technical change offers tech-savvy volunteers an opportunity to share expertise and make a difference to people in need, while learning more about the wireless engineering aspects of broadcast TV. A popular DTV antenna make will be demonstrated, and opportunities to get involved in helping people by making things will also be discussed.

Mercedes Pens Art Car
The Mercedes Pens is a 1981 300SD Mercedes covered in over 10,000 pens. I was inspired by a book on Art Cars and in June of 2005 I had the idea to glue PENS on my car early one morning. So far I have had opportunities to speak in schools about what I do and inspire others to follow their dreams, and appear at various events where kids ages 1-120 years old get to glue pens on my car. In the four years I have been driving this car around I have been able to make a lot of people smile - and that is the best part of why I do this. If you have a chance come by and experience this for your self, and if you happen to have any "dead" pens laying around, bring them and you can glue these on the car also.

In the middle of the mayhem of Maker Faire there would be a little space to sit, watch and tell stories. All that separates us from the time where people whittled in rocking chairs are sticks and knives.

Nove Bit also touches on the notion of a personal memory by recording a users’ thoughts in time and replaying them as a pattern of lights. The visual memories are stored as 9 bits, represented by a corresponding button. Compared to 8 bits, 9 bits also allows for a visually even distribution of the memory as a square. The “Nove”, which means nine in Italian, also references the Arduino Duemilnove, one of the two micro-controllers that control the unit. The programming mode is entered as soon as the user presses any button. The user can program light sequences by simply pressing buttons in the desired pattern. Patterns are recorded after several seconds of inactivity from the user. The patterns are replayed by fading the leds on and off inside the translucent white buttons. The buttons are placed in a wooden facade, while the square, white plexi-glass case forms the base and houses the Arduino and the TLC 5940 micro-controllers. The unit is powered by a wall adapter and can easily fit on a desk, nightstand or other flat surface with limited space.

Numenta's Vision Systems
Numenta is releasing a Vision Toolkit in June that will enable hobbyists to train their own vision system based on our technology. Users will need to train the system with a collection of images, much like humans learn by being exposed to visual images. After training they can present new images (e.g. through a web cam or by dragging image files) to see if the network can recognize them. They can then embed this feature into their own website. It won't be perfect, but I think it will be the first time that computer vision will become really accessible to end users without a specialized degree.

Particle Chamber
Particle Chamber is an immersive interactive soundscape being presented with the Bay Area Computer Music Technology Group (BArCMuT). First the hardware controller, it is a wooden circle with 8 IR sensors(corresponding to 8 speakers) separated by 45 degrees making a full circle. The analog signal from the IRs is then sent through a CV to MIDI circuit (MIDItron), which is connected to a laptop running PD, with a multichannel audio card. PD is doing most of the work; the MIDI data controls several variables of a sort of granular synthesis, as well as controlling the spatialization, harmonics, etc. Most of the spatialization is handled by large filter arrays, and a dynamic reverb. The sensors allow users to interact with the graintable particles and control spatialization with their body position and movement. Furthermore, PD is constantly checking for several types of change in the system overall, including average rate of system change, opposite sensors differential change, and total sensor activity. This type of system encourages group play and swaying dance like body motions. On the other hand, individuals can only control a small amount of the soundscape's parameters, whilst only activating a few speakers at a time but it is definitely still fun. This project is a improvement upon my Senior Project at UCSD, ICAM, which was overseen by Dr. Richard Moore, Peter Otto, and with help from Dr. Miller Puckette.

Permaculture: The cutting edge of a 10,000 yr-old idea Terrie Miller
Permaculture is an design practice that combines several earth sciences to form sustainable human settlements that have the same natural resiliency as a healthy ecosystem. The term “permaculture” was coined by Bill Mollison who, along with his student, David Holmgren. The word itself is a combination of both “permanent agriculture” and “permanent culture.” Permaculture is founded on three ethics: 1. Care of Earth: care for living and non-living things, including plants, animals, land, water and air. 2. Care of People: providing access to resources that are necessary for existence. 3. Setting Voluntary Limits to Consumption and Population: reinvest surplus and reduce waste to do the work of the first two ethics. Visit this project to learn more about permaculture and some of the exciting projects and permaculture education opportunities in the bay area.

Pinbowl Chaos Generator
A large polycarbonate dish 3 feet in diameter contains 4 bumpers, 3 Neon/Argon rings, and 1 to 3 pinballs. They eventually lose momentum, roll back down to the bottom, only to be sent on their way once again by the bumpers. This gives a glimpse of the chaos theory and Brownian motion, besides being a spectacle that is hard to take your eyes off.

Rapid Prototyping of Rapid Prototyping Machines
Makers are increasingly building their own rapid prototyping tools. Unfortunately, the time investment and barriers to entry can be daunting. This exhibit demonstrates methods to ease development, using four working machines as examples: a desktop PCB miller, a plaster xyz cell, a foam-core 3D printer, and a parametrically designed xy stage. 1) A sub-$200 PCB milling machine is the test-bed for using internet protocol as a medium for distributed machine control. 2) Another machine is parametrically designed from engineering formulas and uses a spreadsheet to automatically generate a customized McMaster-Carr order. 3) A third machine is cast out of plaster using laser-cut molds. This has the potential to expand on the parametric design principles and uses an earth-friendly structure. 4) Finally, I've made a 3D printer for less than $100 which can be made at home in around 12 hours. This machine explores the lower boundary conditions of functionality.

Remaking American Manufacturing with Robotics
American Manufacturing remains a strong segment of the American economy and is more adaptable and flexible than ever before. At Heartland Robotics we've visited many factories around the country over the last six months and have learned how that flexibility is achieved: through a combination of large numbers of production workers and a lot of ingenious custom engineering. Every facility we've visited has onsite engineers who design and build specialized tools, jigs, and automatic machines for their own unique facility. These engineers work constantly with production workers to modify lines and machines for improvements in productivity and quality. But American industry will face challenges from changing demographics, as the availability of production workers declines. Workers can use robots to fill the gap, but general purpose industrial robots remain relatively rare in American factories. What will it take for robots to be added to the toolchest of the makers of American manufacturing, so that they can increase productivity, provide better jobs for American workers, and compete even more strongly in our globalized world?

Seasteading
What is Seasteading? Seasteading is creating permanent dwellings on the ocean - homesteading the high seas. Why would we want to do that? Because the world needs a new frontier, a place where those who wish to experiment with building new societies can go to test out their ideas. By opening the ocean as a new frontier, we hope to revolutionize the quality of government and social systems worldwide by enabling experimentation, innovation, and competition. We realize it's a long shot but we strongly believe it's possible. Our philosophy revolves around incrementalism - starting small and building up over time. At this time we want to grow awareness and membership in the seasteading community, share ideas and try to make them a reality. We are presenting our most recent concepts and ideas (video presentation, images of possible designs) and celebrating ideas in the making by organizing a mini design contest where we give participants a chance to build their own miniature seasteads and try them in out on site TSI aquarium. Successfully floating a design will win a TSI rubber duckie and recognition in the seasteading community.

SWARM
SWARM is a kinetic art work of semi-autonomous spherical robots ("Orbs"). Each robot has a shell 30 inches in diameter, with batteries, motors, audio system and color LED illumination inside. The SWARM is under the command of an on-board computer with wireless connectivity to other orbs and a central computer. SWARM is built to explore the aesthetic possibilities in the emergent behavior of artificial systems. As a first step, Orbs are remote-controlled by human operators, but each Orb's sounds and color illumination is algorithmically generated in response to location and motion. Each Orb has sophisticated navigational sensors including GPS, accelerometers, and rate gyros. We are progressing towards sophisticated navigational algorithms, much like those used in spacecraft, that allow each orb to determine its location with high accuracy. From this, we can explore emergent and cooperative behavior like flocking as well as new possibilities in machine choreography. SWARM is not a simulation. SWARM is a platform for art of the 21st century.
