We have large pedal-powered rides, including the 80-foot-long , 6-rider rattlesnake. Then there is the 15-foot-tall butterfly, the moth, the 4-passenger peacock, the Maker Faire mobile billboard, many cargo bikes, and more. Our huge butterfly appears on Maker Faire postcards, and on the 8x11 Maker Faire Austin bill.
Austin Permaculture Guild
Permaculture, a design system for creating sustainable human environments, is a way of thinking that activates people's innate green design skills. We will explain and demo home-scale methods of gardening, harnessing renewable energy, and collecting/reusing resources.

Eco-modding with Illuminati Motor Works
The Illuminati Motor Works Team is an official Automotive X-Prize Contender. They are competing for the “1 Gallon of Gas, 100 Miles — $10 Million: The Race to Build the Supergreen Car.” At Maker Faire, they will be conducting daily eco-modding workshops as they focus on how to get better mileage and improve performance on the Hyundai Genesis.

This 4ft x 16ft table will have graduated heights to accommodate builders and scientists of all statures.

Lithium-ion Plug-In Hybrid Conversion
Hybrid Plugs, Inc. will do a live Lithium-ion "Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle" conversion of a Toyota Prius at the 2008 Austin Maker Faire. The conversion will be done in stages over the course of two days allowing for interaction between the attending audience and the converters. The Prius once converted with be able to achieve over 100 mpg for the first 40 miles each day. Also on display, will be a completed Ford Escape Hybrid converted by Hybrid Plugs, Inc. that achieves over 50 mpg for the first 50 miles each day. Sculpt Your Own Earthen Oven
Natural building uses natural, locally-available materials to construct beautiful, nontoxic, environmentally-responsible structures for living. As a demonstration of natural building that anyone can create in a couple of weekends, we will build a wood-fired earthen oven that not only can be sculpted into limitless forms but bakes amazing pizza!

Swap-O-Rama-Rama
At this Swap-O-Rama-Rama you'll find a host of talent brought together to teach you how to transform your new/used duds into works of your own. Together they bring you: DIY Stations where you can learn many wonderful ways to create out of textile reuse, Sewing Stations where local designers will teach you fresh clothing mod tricks, on site Silk Screeners & Stencilers with a host of original designs and extraordinary local designers who'll show off their work in the Swap-O-Rama-Rama reuse fashion show.
Of course the core of the swap is the gigantic piles of free clothing (several thousand pounds!) sorted into categories: pants, shirts, skirts, sweaters etc. These piles are the collective total of each guest’s contribution of any size bag of unwanted clothes so clean out those closets and let go of what's no longer inspiring. Take home as much clothing as you can carry. Remainders go to a local women's shelter.
The Down and Dirty of Green Cleaning
Visitors will be able to make their own natural cleaning products and take them home. We will be doing hourly demonstrations and imparting our chemical-free cleaning wisdom throughout the day. We are there to give people the tools to help them make sustainable, healthy decisions for themselves and this rock we live on.
UT Solar Vehicle: Samsung Solorean
The University of Texas Solar Vehicles Team is a student organization sponsored by the Cockrell School of Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. The team consists of a diverse range of students from the College of Engineering and other majors. Under the guidance of Professor Gary Hallock, students raise funds, design, build, test, and race vehicles powered only by the sun.
The UT Solar Vehicles Team is dedicated to raising awareness and working as a team to design an effective means of solar-electric transportation, while representing the University of Texas in competitions.
The team is a student-run, mostly undergraduate, volunteer organization. Students are responsible for every part of the process of building the car, from body design to power maintenance to actually assembling the car.
